Shortly before 10:45 a.m. on Friday, March 3, crews from the Singerly Fire Company and surrounding agencies were called to Nottingham Road in Elkton, where there was a report of a blaze that broke out inside a two-story single family home.
While battling the fire, officials say that a firefighter from the agency fell from a second story deck and had to be treated at the scene by paramedics. He was then flown to Shock Trauma by a Maryland State Police helicopter and is expected to recover from his injuries.
According to the fire marshal, it took a team of 40 firefighters approximately an hour to get the fire under control, but not before it caused an estimated $250,000 ($200,000 to the structure, $50,000 to its contents) in damage.
Officials said that a total of three people were present when the fire broke out, two who were outside and one who was inside and discovered the flames. He was able to escape with multiple dogs safely.
No other injuries were reported.
The fire marshal made note that the home was originally built before 1930 and has been renovated multiple times and was under an ongoing renovation. The property includes 40 acres and houses 18 horses.
